En 1989 en el Laboratorio Europeo de Partículas Físicas CERN, Tim Berners Lee creó un sistema de hipertexto basado en la red Internet, cuyo primer prototipo fue puesto en marcha a finales de 1991.Éste fue un avance fundamental para las herramientas de búsqueda ya que esos links o vínculos serán los que permitirán a los motores de búsqueda relacionar información dispersa.
