Al término de la primera Guerra Mundial, España se encontraba rezagada en lo económico y lo agrícola. El régimen monárquico mostraba la peculiaridad de que el ejército y la iglesia católica ejercían sobre el rey una fuerte influencia. El general Miguel Primo Rivera, jefe militar de Cataluña, se rebelaba e implantará una dictadura militar que lo mantuvo en el poder durante siete años.(1923-1930).
En 1936 se sublevaron las guarniciones de Melilla, bajo las órdenes del general Francisco Franco, tras unas elecciones en las que el frente popular, integrado por Republicanos y partido de izquierda, obtuvo una amplia mayoría.
Durante la Guerra Civil Española se enfrentaron dos fuerzas políticas y militares, que se organizaron como se muestra a continuación.

General Miguel Primo Rivera, commander of Catalonia rebelled and implement a military dictatorship that held power for seven years.(1923-1930).
In 1936 they revolted Melilla garrisons under the command of General Francisco Franco, after an election in which the popular front, composed of Republicans and left-wing party, won a large majority.
