El termino energía es bastante común; sin embargo, definir qué es exactamente no resulta fácil. Algo similar sucede cuando se habla del amor, se sabe cuando hay mucho o cuando es poco, pero decir con certeza qué es este escurridizo concepto, eso….es otra cosa.
Una forma de definir la energía trata de la capacidad que tiene la materia para producir un trabajo, fue propuesta por Thomas Young en 1807, esto quiere decir que para que un lápiz ruede sobre la mesa, requiere de cierta cantidad de energía; pero también, si el lápiz está quieto sobre la mesa, necesita de cierta cantidad de energía para no rodar, es importante recordar que, la materia y la energía ni se crean ni se destruyen solo se transforman por lo que en cualquier cambio intervienen, lo anterior explica, por ejemplo, la luz y el calor desprendidos en la combustión del papel. Así se puede manifestar la energía en forma de viento, calor, luz, electricidad, etc.
