Extraction of calcium in solution from eggshell

Keywords: Eggshell, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, calcium oxide

Abstract

Chicken eggshells were processed by crushing, and then the most suitable calcination was studied. A study of the effect of the dissolution of the calcined eggshell was carried out, evaluating hydrochloric acid (HCl) and acetic acid (C2H4O2). The effect of acid concentration, temperature and agitation was analyzed. Crystallographic studies show that after calcination, CaCO3 was obtained as the majority phase. Acetic acid at a concentration of 0.8 M was found to dissolve calcined eggshell more effectively compared to 4M hydrochloric acid. Likewise, it was established that at a temperature of 50 ° C with acetic acid and with stirring, a dissolution percentage of 93.58% by mass was obtained. Finally, the solution containing the Ca species was dried, subsequently calcined at 850 ° C, and a crystallographic analysis was carried out, finding only the calcium oxide phase, thus confirming the presence of the calcium ion in the solution.
