Synthesis of fluorescent coumarins
Abstract
A family of four conjugated coumarins with different substituents (LIC1, LIC2, LIC3 and LIC4), were synthesized and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR. The study of their optical properties in solution using THF as solvent, shows that compounds have broad absorption bands with peaks at 350, 365, 330 and 340 nm and broad emission bands in the blue-green region of the electromagnetic spectrum, with peaks at 412, 416, 414, 408 nm respectively. The Egopt value calculated from the absorption spectra for each compound was 2.9, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.16 eV, indicating that the compounds are in the range of semiconducting materials. Calculations of fluorescence quantum yield, taking as standard quinine sulfate, indicate that the compounds LIC4(f=0.49) and LIC1(f=0.42) are candidates for use in the construction of light-emitting diodes devices.
