Characterization of a mineral from the Concordia mine, Zimapán, Hidalgo

Abstract

This study shows the chemical and mineralogical characterization of a sulphide ore collected at La Concordia mine located in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy (ICP), for particules of different mesh sizes, reported to Zn (1.81%) and Fe (2.36%) as the metallic elements in higher quantity, and the presence of Mo (0.01%), Sb (0.05%), Cu (0.15%), Pb (0.78%), Ag (0.01%) and W (0.04%). The results obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD) determined that the mineralogical matrix of the particles corresponds to species Wollastonite (CaSiO3) and Orthoclase (AlKSi3O8). The presence of abundant iron sulphides as Mackinawite (FeS) and Magnetite (Fe3O4) was identified, whose composition was corroborated by punctual analysis and mapping performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive Microanalysis (SEM-EDS).
