Rapid method of chemical characterization of recycled concrete by SEM-EDS
Abstract
This paper presents a simple and rapid method to chemically characterize samples of recycled concrete by energy dispersive X ray analysis (or EDX, EDS, EDAX), considering the limitations of the technique and certain peculiarities of the material. This study arises from the need to optimize time and resources in the chemical characterization of large numbers of samples of recycled concrete aggregates in the analysis of construction and demolition waste. It should be mentioned, that it is necessary to know the minerals present in the recycled material before to draw conclusions from the quantitative microanalysis which is considered complementary. The objective to know the elemental chemicalanalysis of various samples of recycled aggregates is to determine the atomic ratios Ca/Si, Al/Si, etc., data that interpreted correctly provides information about the properties of recycled concrete. The sequence of this rapid method of chemical characterization of recycled concrete is: sampling, quartering, size comminution by manual means to <75 μm, dried at 100 °C for 3 hours and EDS/SEM analysis. The results obtained with this methodology are estimated reliable and with an error statistically acceptable.
