The Muhi Quarry from Zimapan (Late Albian), history and preservation

Keywords: Paleontological heritage, Fossils, Cretaceous, El Doctor Formation

Abstract

The Muhi Quarry is a fossiliferous site of northwestern Hidalgo, with an approximate age of 102 million years. The locality is constituted by laminated limestones originated in a shallow ocean during the Cretaceous. The quarry is exploited by members of the San Pedro, community of Zimapán to obtain slabs for building. During the extraction of the rocks, fossils embedded may appear. Since 1998, members of the Yáñez family have donated the material they find, which is deposited in the Paleontological Museum of the Autonomous University of Hidalgo. Fossils recovered in the locality are part of the national heritage, therefore we must preserve them.
