The Firemouths: Subaquatic Treasures of Mexico

Keywords: Cichlidae, exotic species, freshwater fishes, mojarras, Thorichthys

Abstract

In Central America there is a group of freshwater fish called cichlids that have evolved and developed different anatomical forms and behaviors due to the diversity of habitats to which they have adapted. In this group there are some fishes very appreciated in the aquarium hobby known as firemouths, these have very striking colorations highlighting the reddish tones in its mouth. They are distributed in rivers from Veracruz to Honduras. They are important in ecosystems as they form an energy flow and for human beings who use them as food and for ornamental purposes. Unfortunately, the impact of anthropogenic activities puts these fish at risk, as they are vulnerable to pollution and competition with exotic species.
