Biodiversidad y Geodiversidad
Abstract
We review the biodiversity and geodiversity concepts in order to analyze if the inclusion of the fossil record in their definitions would be appropriate. The second concept includes fossils, but not the first one, even though we know life arose millions of years ago and that the fossil record constitutes the historical component of recent biodiversity. As such, we offer a reflection on the importance of the study of geodiversity to preserve recent ecosystems, and we propose that a precise categorization of the biotic and abiotic processes that have shaped our planet since the beginning is necessary.
