The races of maize given the presence of climate change in Mexico

Abstract

Corn (maize) is a very important food for Mexicans and many of the most charactaristic foods in the country are made from this grain. Today maize is seriously threatened by climate change, since human activities have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, modifying the earth’s climate. These environmental changes can put maize cultivation and productivity at risk throughout Mexico and negatively impact the country’s food security. This study shows that by 2050, the potential distribution of Mushito corn might be reduced, while the distribution of the Tuxpeño race might be increased.
