Bats, nocturnal sentinels of livestock systems

Keywords: Feeding, anthropized environments, environmental awareness, services

Abstract

Livestock production is responsible for generating more than one million permanent paid jobs in Mexico. Bats are mammals that have very important ecological functions in cattle ranching environments, such as the control of insect vectors of diseases, and the pollination and seed dispersal of plant that can be used as fodder. However, three species could be a threat to livestock production by feeding on livestock blood and being vectors of rabies. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present management and environmental education proposals that would help reduce conflicts between bats and livestock producers.
