Exploring the molecular arsenal of fish parasites

Keywords: Platyhelminths, Genomics, Aquaculture, Diseases

Abstract

Fishes are hosts of a wide diversity of parasites. One of the most common parasites are the platyhelminths of the class Monogenea, which can negatively affect the aquaculture by causing diseases and economic losses. There are several methods used as anti-monogeneans, but their efficacy and safety are variables. In order to find better methods, it is possible to explore the molecules released by parasites involved in host colonization. Among these molecules are the excretory/secretory proteins, or secretome. Some of these proteins can be drug targets. So, if we find such targets in monogeneans, it would be possible to conduct investigations to find drugs acting as anti-monogeneans.
