Abstract

Candlemas day is a celebration resulting from a syncretism between pre-Hispanic culture and Catholic religion. Currently this celebration is characterized by the tradition of dressing up Child Jesus figures and to make tamales. However, there are other elements, such as “ramo palm”, which have a fundamental part in this celebration, as well as the involvement of people dedicated to the weaving and sale of palm leaves, allowing the ramo palm to reach the home of hundreds of families every February 2. With information obtained through observations and open interviews, in this work the plant elements that make up the palm ramo are reported and their important economic, social and ecological aspects are documented.
