Coutaportla and Nernstia (Rubiaceae): Genera endemic to Mexico present in Hidalgo state

Keywords: conservation, endemism, Rubiaceae

Abstract

In Hidalgo there are numerous types of vegetation: temperate forests, cloud forest, xerophytic scrub, tropical forest and dry forest, a range of ecosystems that results in high plant diversity. Diversity in Hidalgo is estimated at 4000 plant species, among this diversity the Rubiaceae family stands out with 711 species in Mexico and 93 in Hidalgo. A very particular aspect of diversity is endemism; among the Rubiaceae endemic to Hidalgo, Coutaportla and Nernstia stand out because they are also endemic to Mexico, both are distributed in the xeric scrub of the Mezquital Valley, the first is also found in Tehuacan-Cuicatlan and the second extends to Tamaulipas, both are remarkable by the beauty of its flowers and its ornamental potential.
