Abstract

Introduction: Noncommunicable diseases affect not only the people who suffer from them, but also their family caregivers. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management support program for family caregivers of chronically ill persons with some level of dependency. Methodology: Pre-experimental study with pre-test and post-test. The sample consisted of an intervention group of 7 caregivers who were selected by means of a purposive sampling and the inclusion criteria: moderate level of dependence, of legal age who accepted to participate in the study and received the Working Together in Collaboration program. The program consisted of the development of skills, procedures, and competencies for self-care of family caregivers. The instruments administered were the Partners in Health Scale (PHS) to measure self-management and the Barthel index to assess dependency. Descriptive and differential statistics were applied with the nonparametric Wilcoxon test. Results: The global self-management obtained a pre-intervention mean of 83.42, which increased to 91.28 post-intervention, as well as in its dimensions: knowledge (pre-test 12.7-posttest 15.85), symptom management (pre-test 22.14-posttest 24.0), adherence to treatment (pre-test 48.71-post-test 51.28), however these improvements were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The program “working together in collaboration” is an effective intervention strategy to improve family caregiver and caregiver self-management as shown by the results of this pilot test.
