Primary Health Care: an acknowledgment of the Sexual and Reproductive Health of the indigenous women of Huitzotlaco

Abstract

Sexual and Reproductive Health in indigenous women is a little explored topic, which leads to an inadequate diagnosis and, of course, to future research, however; the problem does not stop there, because the indigenous population runs the risk of suffering from diseases related to their sexual and reproductive health, for example, Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV-AIDS, cervical cancer, among others, if they do not have adequate information regarding to the topic. It should be noted that the lack of knowledge of sexual and reproductive rights focused on indigenous women leads to vulnerability to sexual violence and violence against their sexual and reproductive rights.

For the present research work, the focus is on the community of Huitzotlaco, municipality of Atlapexco, Hidalgo, in which it is intended to distinguish the practices of Sexual and Reproductive Health of indigenous women as a nursing strategy to use Primary Health Care to propose actions of prevention and recognition of their sexual and reproductive rights, since sexual and reproductive health is such a natural, open, responsible and scientific issue. Indigenous women are very submissive in matters of sexual and reproductive health due to the imposition of their own barriers at the level of customs, beliefs, traditions, cultures, and even stereotypes, taboos, ignorance of their rights and limited access to health services and information on sexual and reproductive health, lead indigenous women to deprive themselves of talking about these issues, therefore, they develop practices of sexual violence and violence against both human rights and sexual and reproductive rights. A sexual and reproductive right is the possibility that indigenous women have to decide how to live aware of not harming themselves or other people.
