Caracterización del biocompósito PCL/celulosa de hoja de maíz

El uso de materiales poliméricos en una amplia variedad de aplicaciones continúa siendo un área de interés para la comunidad científica debido a la necesidad de desarrollar nuevos materiales poliméricos con propiedades físicas, químicas y mecánicas adecuadas, que además presenten fácil degradabilidad o que, al degradarse, eviten la formación de microplásticos que actualmente representan un problema de salud y contaminación ambiental. En este trabajo se revisa el comportamiento de la permeabilidad de un material biocompuesto de policaprolactona (PCL) con la adición de fibras obtenidas de residuos de la hoja de maíz. Se presentan los resultados obtenidos al monitorear la permeabilidad de las películas formadas del biocompuesto de PCL y fibras de hoja de maíz (PCL/HM), utilizando una celda de difusión horizontal, mediante un proceso de cambios de pH y conductividad eléctrica entre una solución buffer de pH 7 (neutro) y una solución de ácido acético al 3%. Asimismo, se analizan los cambios en las propiedades mecánicas de las películas, como la deformación, la fuerza tensil y el módulo de Young, y se correlacionan con la permeabilidad observada. Los resultados sugieren que la incorporación de fibras de hoja de maíz en matrices de PCL permite modificar las propiedades mecánicas y superficiales de las películas. Estos biocompuestos muestran un desempeño mecánico adecuado, lo que sugiere su potencial uso en aplicaciones como empaques y agricultura, aunque se requieren estudios adicionales, particularmente en términos de biodegradabilidad.
