Obtaining α-Al2O3 from aluminum slag

Abstract

This research work describes the production of alpha alumina (α-Al2O3) using aluminum dross, an industrial toxic waste. The process consists of a leaching stage of the aluminum slag with a 0.5M NaOH solution, followed by a precipitation stage with HCl and, finally, calcination of the recovered solid at a temperature of 1200ºC for 72 hours. Of the product obtained, the existing phases are presented by means of the X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), the morphological exploration through the scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM) and the elemental microanalysis by X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). In addition, the liquid resulting from the filtration was analyzed using the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technique.
