Automatic control system based on PLC and HMI for a stirrup bending machine

Abstract

Among the wide variety of materials employed at construction industry there are some structural elements called stirrups, also known as rings, which are typically made of steel wire with large thickness, named wire rod, which for residential homes is commonly one-eighth inch gauged, which must be bent to shape rectangles or squares of different sizes, properly the stirrups, which are used to embrace, confine and position the longitudinal metal bars, generally rods, at the columns and beams assembly. Due to the considerable physical effort that is made in order to manually bend such a material, as well as the high demand of these elements, in the present work the development of a control system to automate a stirrup bending machine is proposed, by implementing electropneumatics with PLC-based control, and monitoring through HMI. This work constitutes a terminal academic project of practical application, focused on the industrial-type processes automation.
