Sodium Fluoroacetate (Compound 1080) poisoning: Case Report.
Abstract
Sodium fluoroacetate or Compound 1080 is a highly water-soluble synthetic salt, discovered by German chemists during World War II and distributed worldwide as a rodenticide. The lethal dose in humans is 2 to 4 mg/kg. The toxicity of sodium fluoroacetate is due to its impairment of the 5-tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle). This article reports a case of intentional ingestion of Compound 1080 in an adult patient, who presented multiple complications which required advanced measures in a hospital environment, as well as the administration of ethanol, obtaining a favorable response. Intoxication by this compound is infrequent and potentially fatal due to the fact that there is no known antidote, and treatment is based on general support measures to maintain the respiratory tract and circulation. Both the literature and clinical practice continue to demonstrate the importance of a correct and timely clinical history, physical examination and integration of a diagnosis, as well as the use of ethanol as an effective alternative in treatment.
