Abstract

It is estimated that syndesmosis injuries occur in 18% of ankle sprains and more than 23% of ankle fractures, being a common cause of pain and arthritis, especially if diagnosis is delayed (Mon, 2019 ). The case of a 63-year-old female patient who underwent a Nursing Process in the immediate postoperative period of an Open Reduction with Internal Fixation (ORIF) of the ankle is presented. Objective: To implement the Nursing Process (NP) to a patient in the post-surgery of a left ankle fracture with a prospective approach in the post-surgical recovery unit, Marjory Gordon's functional patterns were used as a frame of reference. The evaluation of results level of pain improved from moderate to sometimes shown and for pain control it went from sometimes shown to always shown. The implementation of this Nursing Process impacted multiple functional health patterns; however, it was evident that the most affected patterns were activity-exercise and cognitive-perceptual. After the intervention, favorable results were revealed in relation to the management of acute pain related to an injury caused by biological agents.
