Polyethylene fibers in dentistry
Abstract
A tooth with a significant loss of coronal structure requires additional reinforcement to support the remaining coronal structures. Currently, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres, commercially known as Ribbond, available on the market since 1992, are used in the field of dental rehabilitation and offer a better fit to root canals. These fibres are woven triaxially and are short in length. Their main function is to distribute the load-bearing capacity of the restoration, improving its strength, preventing cracks from forming in the restoration and in turn extending into the tooth. Polyethylene fibres are intended to increase the fracture resistance of dental substrates in dental restorations. This is an alternative for the restoration of teeth with loss of tooth structure, preserving the tooth structure at all times and strengthening the reconstruction of teeth with structural loss. It is of great importance to be able to offer our patients high quality treatments, with the newest materials, applying the advances of contemporary dentistry of minimal intervention
