Evolutionary history of the concept and current criteria for the diagnosis of dementia
Abstract
Dementia is one of the most important public health problems facing our society society, its high prevalence in the elderly population, together with the aging of the population pyramid The absence of effective treatments and the high degree of dependency suffered by patients mean that Its medical, personal, family, social and economic repercussions are of great proportions. Correct and early diagnosis, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment, adequate social assessment and allocation of resources for dependency care and care for the caregiver are the key elements of the comprehensive approach to dementia. This article reviews the needs of the patient with dementia and possible strategies for its comprehensive approach.
