Abstract

Pharmacokinetics is the study of the temporal evolution of the concentrations of a drug and/or its metabolites in an organism (fluids, tissues, and extracorporeal compartments) and the mathematical relationships that allow interpreting the data through defined models. It is the study of the ADME process (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion) that a drug undergoes once administered to an individual. In addition, pharmacokinetics is an important aspect of drug therapy and diagnosis of organ function. If an estimate of the changes that influence the therapy, with drugs that have a wide therapeutic range were made, it would be observed that it is very likely that they will cause no harm; however, for drugs with a narrow therapeutic margin, it is recommended to carry out a control, through the measurement of its concentrations and possibly, the correction of the therapy regimen, particularly if side effects occur when the toxic limit is exceeded.
