Abstract

The pharmacist's role developed rapidly to meet the needs of health systems. The careful dispensing prescription drugs and the advice founded on self-medication, remain vitally important part of the service provided by pharmacists, who recognize that enjoys the same importance advise other health professionals on the safe and rational use drugs such as accepting responsibility for ensuring that medicines are used safely and effectively by those who are excused, to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit from treatment. This activity contributes both to the welfare of the individual and the general improvement of public health.
These developments set the activities for the practice of pharmacy, whose origins were reflected in different meetings to define the role of the pharmacist in the health team, which has been analyzed in various global activities of the World Health Organization, prominent among them the meeting held in New Delhi in December 1988, following up on this one, held in Tokyo, Japan, in September 1993 and later in Vancouver in 1997, whose findings led to establish the knowledge, skills and responsibilities pharmacist in relation to the care needs of the patient and the community.
