Contributions of epidemiology to the health sciences: beyond statistics

Keywords: Epidemiology, health planning, public health, uses of epidemiology

Abstract

Epidemiology has been closely linked to concepts such as mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence, however, the great diversity of activities to be carried out make it a science that has generated great contributions to the understanding of the health-disease process. The objective of this article was to expose the contribution of epidemiology to health sciences through the description of the phenomena and concepts of epidemiological work, its functions to be performed and the scientific scope of the different phases of the epidemiological method. From this analysis it is concluded that its contributions allow generating better conditions to positively impact population health, which makes it a key science in the field of health sciences.
