Abstract

Pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) continues to be an important challenge for clinical medicine, in some cases it can lead to rapid death, while in others it does not present with symptoms and can go asymptomatic, in addition, it is the third cause of death of cardiovascular origin. This disease is caused by the migration of a blood clot, mainly from the pelvic limbs, which lodges in a pulmonary artery causing its partial or complete obstruction. The purpose of this review is to describe the epidemiology, risk factors, and pathophysiology of PE and analyze the diagnosis and clinical manifestation of the disease, as well as its treatment and follow-up.
