Keywords: Quality of care, pediatric surgery, teaching, COVID- 19 pandemic

Abstract

Objective: To identify the measures adopted by different institutions in the area of pediatric surgery in relation to patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A search was conducted in September 2021 through PubMed Central using four words: "Pediatric surgery, pandemic, COVID-19, and quality of care." Twenty articles in English language were chosen, whose works were carried out in institutions in Europe, Asia and America. Each one of the articles was analyzed to identify the implementation of actions that would allow the continuation of patient care in the institutions involved. Material: Twenty articles, published in English, from three continents. Results: Nine published in Europe, four in Asia and the rest in America; seven different types of actions were identified to continue with patient care, which were: administrative (19); operating room care (9); work team integration (8); classification of surgeries (elective or emergency; 7); internal structural (4); teaching method (3); outpatient care (3). Conclusion: The SARS-Cov2 virus has generated a collapse of the health system; It significantly affected the child population, especially regarding surgical conditions, since there is evidence of the existence of panic generated in the parents of these patients, which means that timely diagnosis is not made and treatment is delayed. Also, resident physicians in this area have been poorly trained in surgical procedures. The modifications exposed in this article are a guideline that marks the before and after the pandemic.
