Homosexual martyrdom: parallels in the visualization of San Sebastian
Abstract
This document presents an explanatory approach on the parallelism between the concept of Christian martyrdom and the suffering of homosexuals, through the resignified image of Saint Sebastian in the visual arts, being guided by a brief historical journey on the perception of the homosexuality from the appropriation of the iconographic elements of the martyr by modern artists and the way in which homosexuals were symbolically identified, with the aim of demonstrating and evidencing the way in which the visualization of the Christian saint led to an identification and appropriation of the symbolic and iconographic elements as a symbol of homosexual martyrdom.
