Esta revisión describe la importancia del calostro, la leche y los sustitutos de leche que se administran a los terneros. Se hace hincapié en los requisitos de energía, proteína, minerales, vitaminas y agua. La revisión también explora el papel de los iniciadores y su transición de alimento líquido a sólido. La revisión concluye con un análisis de la anatomía y fisiología del tracto digestivo del ternero.
