Perspectivas del uso de los posos de café en la agricultura

El gran consumo de café alrededor del mundo ha creado una problemática sobre los posos de café (PC), creando una alta Demanda Bioquímica de Oxígeno para su descomposición. Recientemente, se ha impulsado la búsqueda de alternativas sostenibles aplicadas a la agricultura, debido a su aporte de nutrientes esenciales. Este artículo de revisión se basa en los diversos usos agrícolas de los PC, incluyendo sus aplicaciones como enmiendas orgánicas en fresco, componente de composta y vermicomposta, biocarbón en plántula, sustratos para producción de setas, plaguicida y otras aplicaciones importantes en el sector agrícola. Los resultados de la recopilación de estudios experimentales indican que los PC pueden mejorar la estructura del suelo y aumentar la retención de humedad. Sin embargo, su uso directo puede generar efectos fitotóxicos debido al contenido de metabolitos secundarios como la cafeína y polifenoles. No obstante, estos efectos pueden mitigarse mediante compostaje previo o mezclas con estiércoles. En conclusión, las aplicaciones agrícolas son una alternativa viable para el reciclaje de los PC promoviendo la economía circular y sostenibilidad de los sistemas productivos.
