Plant extracts and its constituents as alternative of treatment against scabies in rabbits: Review

Keywords: Plan extracts, Scabie, Sarcoptes scabiei, Psosoptes cuniculi, Rabbits

Abstract

Scabies is one of the most severe ectoparasitic diseases in rabbits. Scabies seriously affects the commercial rabbit breeding, causing severe economic losses and having a negative impact on the sustainability of productive units. Conventionally, rabbit mites are treated with organophosphate, organochlorine, pyrethrin, and macrolide products. However, they have side effects on animals, are dangerous for the environment, have negative effects on public health, and some genera of mites have shown resistance to them. Due to this, it is necessary to look for new treatment alternatives that are functional, safe, and innocuous, with low environmental impact and cost, such as extracts obtained from plants with demonstrated acaricidal activity in in vitro and in vivo tests. The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic search for documents in which the acaricidal activity extracts of plants or pure compounds obtained from them, against Sarcoptes scabiei and Psoroptes cuniculi var. cuniculi. The acaricidal activity of 3 plants against S. scabiei was reported, while 7 plants showed activity against P. cuniculi var. cuniculi. Regarding the pure compounds, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, flavones, flavonols, ellagitannins, alkaloids, and cardiotonic glycosides have shown acaricidal activity against the main ectoparasites that cause scabies in rabbits.
