What is the water-energy-food nexus?
Abstract
The growing global demand for fresh water, energy and food has led the scientific community to develop a new concept to analyze, evaluate and implement mitigation measures in the face of this great crisis. This is how the water-energy-food nexus (WEF) approach arises, which refers to the interactions that occur between these three resources, with all their synergies and compensations that result from this relationship. Consequently, this research aims to explain how the concept was developed from its origins at the Nexus Conference in Bonn in 2011, what the most used analysis tools and methodologies have been, and finally, to observe some success stories. Concluding that achieving a comprehensive analysis of the three resources and not evaluating each resource separately, will provide a series of strategies that will help reduce adverse environmental, social and economic effects.
