Identification of priority areas of conservation for the genus Phrynosoma
Abstract
Lizards of the genus Phrynosoma, consists of 17 species 16 distributed in Mexico. Their populations have been threatened by illegal trafficking and by myths and beliefs related to these species. Due to the above, it is important to determine priority areas for the conservation of horned lizards, so the objective of this work is to recognize the protected natural areas (PNAs) where these species are distributed in Mexico and to determine areas that are of the highest priority for their conservation. 51 PNA were identified through searches carried out in the EncicloVida database with the "search by region" tool 14 of the 16 species are distributed in them. Finally, to determine sequences of priority areas, the taxonomic weight index and complementarity methods were implemented, prioritizing 26 PNAs in which 82.35% of the species of the genus Phrynosoma are preserved.
