Morphological and morphometric variations of Syphacia peromysci parasite of Peromycus.

Keywords: Rodents, Nematode, Multivariate analysis

Abstract

Syphacia peromysci is considered a species of Peromyscus oligoxene nematode, but morphological inconsistencies and its wide distribution in the USA and Mexico raise doubts about its taxonomy. In the present study, 82 females identified as S. peromysci from five Peromyscus species (P. boylii, P. difficilis, P. gratus, P. maniculatus and P. melanotis) from Chihuahua and Veracruz were morphologically and morphometrically reviewed. With the morphometric data, a multivariate analysis of Principal Coordinates was carried out, comparing the organisms from Chihuahua with the specimens from Veracruz identified as S. peromysci. As a result, two populations were obtained (Chihuahua and Veracruz), identifying within the Chihuahua rodents three morphotypes thanks to the differences found in the ultrastructure of the cephalic plates.
