Abstract

Advances in science and technology have allowed some materials to be modified through the action of biological agents, in order to provide the necessary elements for life development. Among all these developments environmental biotechnology arises as an area of biotechnology that uses organisms or parts of them, to obtain products and services for decontamination and preservation of the environment.

The action areas of environmental biotechnology include: development of technologies to counteract the climate change, alternative energy production, recycling processes, treatment of contaminated water, soil and air, among others.
