SMA characterization and their applications: A survey

Keywords: Shape memory alloys, biomedical, actuators, robotics

Abstract

The materials based on Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are classified as "smart materials", as they have characteristics such as: high force / weight ratio, low weight and silent performance. Nitinol is a metal alloy with a ratio of 50 % Ni - 50 % Ti (NiTi) that is trained in memory and shape, which is widely used to imitate the behavior of human muscles, since when heated they contract, due to the memory effect of shape, and return to their shape on cooling. One advantage of using the Niti in biomedical applications and characterize the material, is from the design of actuators based on SMAs. This work presents some methods for the characterization of actuators with SMA and also makes a review of biomedical applications since the discovery of NiTi and its implementation in current rehabilitation systems.
