A Modified Set Covering Model for Locating Distribution Centers: A Case Study in México
Abstract
The main objective of this research was to create a modification of the set covering model to locate merchandise distribution centers and analyze their behavior in a case study. The Modification consists of considering round-trip routes from the colonies of a city to the possible distribution centers. In this way, the set covering model tries to find the smallest number of distribution centers so that the round-trip distances are not greater than a predetermined distance. The modified model was compared to the traditional model in which it only considered one-way trips. Some candidate places to locate the distribution centers were eliminated from the initially feasible set due to limitations to be built there, however, these places were kept as sources of demand. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out on the parameter of maximum distance to travel to compare the solutions obtained by both models in terms of a performance measure.
