Phase Transformations during heat treatment of austempering of a steel 0.41%C - 0.7%Mn - 2.15%Si - 0.013%Al
Abstract
This work analyzed the phase transformations that occur in the advanced high strength steel (AHSS) 0.41%C- 0.7%Mn- 2.15%Si - 0.013%Al, this material is widely applied to the automobile industry for manufacture vehicle’s body and chassis as a result their excellent mechanical properties such as impact energy absorption and toughness. The Thermo-Calc software enabled us to predict the formation of the following phases: ferrite and carbides from received steel and the presence from austenite, bainite and carbides after heat treatment. The Thermo-Calc calculated results; TTT diagram agrees with micrographs and XRD. The results from austempering heat treatment present a microstructure composed of fine bainite, retained austenite and carbides M7C3, improving their mechanical properties, mainly hardness and ultimate tensile strength, 61 HR30N and 1513 MPa, respectively, compared to the initial condition, 45 HR30N and 856 MPa.
