Microbiota intestinal y su relación con la salud mental. Una revisión narrativa
Resumen
En las últimas décadas la prevalencia de los trastornos mentales ha incrementado de manera global. A pesar de que también han existido avances en las terapias farmacológicas, la prevención y el manejo de este tipo de enfermedades continúan siendo un reto para la salud pública. Diversa evidencia sugiere que la microbiota intestinal ejerce una influencia considerable en la neurofisiología humana por lo que las interacciones entre la microbiología intestinal y los diversos procesos metabólicos y fisiológicos del huésped ahora se han implicado tanto en el desarrollo de afecciones psiquiátricas como en la eficacia de muchas terapias comunes. Es imperativo que el personal de salud que tienen un trato directo con personas que padecen problemas de salud mental, conozcan el efecto de la disbiosis de la microbiota intestinal sobre el desarrollo de enfermedades mentales, así como el mecanismo subyacente de dicha relación, para poder emprender estrategias para su tratamiento y prevención. Por tal motivo, este manuscrito presenta una revisión narrativa sobre la evidencia experimental y epidemiológica que vincula al microbiota intestinal con la presencia de ansiedad, depresión, trastorno obsesivo compulsivo, trastorno del espectro autista y demencia.
