Burnout syndrome among nursing staff after caring for patients with COVID-19 in a tertiary hospital in Mexico City

Keywords: Nursing Staff, COVID-19, burnout

Abstract

Introduction: Previous evidence suggests that burnout syndrome may continue to manifest itself long after the stressors in the work environment have decreased, so nursing staff who at some point provided care to critically ill patients with COVID-19 could continue to do so. presenting this condition. Objective: Determine the frequency of SB in nursing staff after caring for patients with COVID-19. Methods:  A Cross-sectional quantitative study was carried out in a sample of 133 nurses from a tertiary hospital in Mexico City, Mexico. To determine the presence of SB, the Maslach Burnout Inventory was used, made up of dimensions: exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal achievement. Results: 88.0% of the nursing staff presented general BS. 6% of the participants had high levels of SB in the emotional exhaustion dimension, while 38.8% and 88.8% presented these same levels in the dimensions of depersonalization and personal fulfilment. The frequency of SB in the depersonalization dimension was higher in those who worked in the emergency department. Conclusions: The frequency of SB in nursing staff who at some point actively participated in the care of patients with COVID-19 is high. Due to the repercussions that this condition can have on the health of nursing staff, and the quality of patient care, the development of psychological action protocols aimed at nursing staff is imperative.
