Depresión en el adulto mayor: Una aproximación desde la neuropsicología

Resumen

La depresión en el adulto mayor representa un desafío para la investigación y la práctica clínica, debido a sus manifestaciones clínicas particulares, la alta comorbilidad con condiciones médicas y su frecuente asociación con alteraciones neurocognitivas. En este contexto, resulta importante explorar los mecanismos neurobiológicos subyacentes, los factores psicosociales asociados y su impacto en los procesos cognitivos, con el propósito de favorecer evaluaciones precisas y el diseño de intervenciones adecuadas. Si bien el tratamiento farmacológico suele ser el más empleado, para ofrecer un tratamiento más integral se revisarán diversas propuestas de intervención: desde programas preventivos hasta intervenciones especializadas, que además de representar una ventaja económica en comparación al tratamiento farmacológico, se caracterizan por su alta tasa de efectividad. El presente trabajo analiza la depresión en el adulto mayor desde una perspectiva neuropsicológica, centrándose en los procesos de evaluación e intervención, con el propósito de fomentar estrategias terapéuticas orientadas al bienestar y calidad de vida de las personas mayores.
