Potential use of Avocado peel and seed as source of bioactive compounds with functional activities for a sustainability development

Abstract

The avocado is a tropical fruit considered native to Tropical America, Central America and Mexico. Unlike other fruits, it is low in sugar and has a high nutritional quality due to its content of vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber and unsaturated fatty acids. In addition, it is characterized by the presence of various phytochemicals, such as lutein, glutathione, β-sitosterol, phenolic antioxidants, and phytosterols. Although avocado peel and seed are considered waste products and a potential source of contamination, they have been shown to contain a large number of phytochemicals, including phenolic acids, condensed tannins, and flavonoids such as procyanidins, flavonols, hydroxybenzoic, and hydroxycinnamic acids. Avocado peel and seed have been shown to have nutraceutical and functional properties, showing potential as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and oxidative reaction inhibitors. Therefore, avocado is considered a functional food due to the multiple benefits it brings to health. The use of these avocado waste products not only takes advantage of their nutraceutical potential, but also promotes practices in line with sustainable development, thus contributing to caring for the environment
