Au(III) recovery with ionic liquids encapsulated with chitosan
Abstract
In this work the results of the Au(III) recovery study from HCl solutions are presented. The ionic liquid (IL) Cyphos IL 101 (trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride) encapsulated with chitosan crosslinked with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPF) was used as extractant. Different manufacturing parameters were evaluated, such as IL concentration (5-30%) and crosslinking time (20 min and 24h). Subsequently, the efficiency and speed of Au(III) extraction were evaluated. Crosslinking avoids chitosan dissolution in acidic media, however, only materials with low IL concentration (5-10%) in 1.0 M HCl media were stables. Au(III) was efficiently extracted as anionic tetrachloride through an ion exchange mechanism. Extraction efficiency was increased with IL concentration in the microcapsules (until 72 mg g-1), without significative affectations on the extraction speed. Capacity and speed of Au(III) extraction were not significantly affected by the crosslinking time.
