Aqueous two-phase system for the HNO3 extraction

Keywords: extraction, aqueous, twophase, polyethylene, nitric, acid

Abstract

In the last years, the extraction of species by the aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) has been relevant because they are easy to operate and do not cause damage to the environment. However, these systems are complex to understand the extraction mechanisms due to are formed by two water-rich phases. Therefore, this work focuses on the evaluation of the HNO3 extraction behavior in an ATPS prepared by 20 wt% Na2SO4 and 35 wt% PEG-1000. The stability of the ATPS at different HNO3 concentrations was evaluated, and the extraction percentage and distribution coefficient of H+ and NO3- from the aqueous phase to the polymer phase was determined, and an extraction scheme was proposed.
