Autonomous function and resting state in mild cognitive impairment: a pilot study

Keywords: cardiac autonomic function, risk factors, heart rate variability, mild cognitive impairment, neuropsychological tests

Abstract

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a pathological precursor of dementia. Cerebral and cardiovascular diseases favor the development of MCI. This is a pilot study about MCI and cardiovascular autonomic modulation and a methodology was proposed to assess older adults with MCI by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV). Four older adults (66.8 ± 3 years) with MCI and 4 older adults (70.5 ± 6 years) without MCI participated in the study. HRV was assessed during a 5-min eyes-closed resting condition. A significant negative correlation between age and the absolute power of the high frequency related to Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia was found, but there was not a significant difference in HRV between the two groups. Resting HRV did not contribute in identifying the presence of MCI. During  assessments of HRV, larger samples and high-demanding tasks are suggested.
