Analysis of helminth richness in rodents of México

Keywords: Nematoda, Platyhelminthes, Rotifera, Cestoidea, Acantocephala

Abstract

In Mexico there are 1,207 species of registered rodents, Oaxaca is the state with the most reports (62). The inventory of helminths in these hosts has been gathered in different national and international collections and bibliographic sources, derived from this an analysis of the richness of helminths in rodents in the country is presented. The parasites recorded to date are 86 taxa identified at the species level, while indeterminate taxa are 77. The best-represented helminth Phylum is Nematoda with 38 genera, followed by Platyhelminthes with 22 and Rotifera with 2. There are 75 rodent species in in 25 states reported as hosts. Considering the previous information, in the country, the helminthological fauna of these animals is far from complete since from this perspective, only 6.2% has been studied; If the average number of helminths per host (2.1) is maintained, it would be estimated that approximately 2,400 of these species are still to be registered for Mexico.
