Fractal Analysis of the Electroencephalogram During Rest of Older Adults from Hidalgo State and Cognitive Impairment
Abstract
It is known that the Detrended Fluctuations Analysis or DFA of biological time series like the Electrocardiogram (ECG), the Electroencephalogram (EEG) and others, turns out to be a useful tool to discriminate between health or illness. In order to corroborate if there are differences between the DFA of Older Adults (OAs) with Cognitive Impairment (CI) and without Cognitive Impairment (wCI), DFAs were performed in two subjects, each of them diagnosed with CI or wCI. EEG and Electromyography (EMG) records were obtained during the closed-eyes condition. A friendly interface was developed in Python that was used for the calculation of DFAs of selected time series. It was observed that at rest with closed eyes, the subject with CI has higher values in frontal regions than the subject wCI. It is concluded that the DFA provides quantifiable information on the location and mechanisms underlying the CI that can serve to help to monitor the course of CI in OAs.
