Abstract

Phosphorus is a key ingredient for living organisms. As long as the world population continues growing, the food production and the phosphorus demand will also increase. However, this nutrient is obtained from phosphate mineral ores that could be depleted in the coming years. In the paper being summarized here, the historical, current and future availability of phosphorus is presented as a critical factor of world food security. Sustainable alternatives for the demand of this element to be satisfied are also discussed.
